Christmas cookies

December 5th, 2011

One of my favorite Christmas’ habits is to decorate cookies. I love them for decorating home, for eating but in particular I love the moment when I sit down with a several colored sugar paste and cookies, ready for the creative part.

Christmas cookies

In my family we do not love gingerbread cookies so I work on some simple chocolate cookies with typical Christmas shape, trees, bells and stars. Then I use the colored paste for decorating them, here is the recipe:

Decorating sugar paste recipe.

  • 1 egg white
  • 200g of icing sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice

To get the dough whip the egg whites adding the sugar a little at a time and the lemon juice. Finally add the color of your choice. I choose white and pink this year and I love it! When you finish, let your cookies rest, the dough needs some time to dry.

Pink elephant cupcakes with sugar pastry step by step

The last weekend two friends came for dinner but after a very busy day I had not the time to prepare a real cake, so I decided to use some already prepared cupcake and decorate them with sugar paste. This paste is really easy to do.

Sugar paste recipe:

  • Preparation time: 15 min
  • ready in: 30 min
  • 500 g of icing sugar
  • 5 g of gelatin leaves
  • 40 ml of water
  • 50 ml of honey + red food coloring

Put the fish gelatin to dissolve in water. Meanwhile, put the honey on the stove for a few seconds and add the gelatin dissolved. Stir until the gelatin will be blended with honey.
Put the icing sugar into a bowl and add the mixture. Also add a few drops of coloring. Stir with your hand until you get a smooth paste

When I got the paste ready I started decorating my cupcakes. First of all I added a layer of whipped cream and then a circle, ear, the small pink trunk and in the end the eyes (two chocolate drops). They were ready in 30 minutes with the pleasure of my friends!
